A behavioral characterization of plausible priors
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent decision theories represent ambiguity via multiple priors, interpreted as alternative probabilistic models of the relevant uncertainty. This paper provides a robust behavioral foundation for this interpretation. A prior P is “plausible” if preferences over some subset of acts admit an expected utility representation with prior P , but not with any other prior Q 6= P . Under suitable axioms, plausible priors can be elicited from preferences, and fully characterize them; also, probabilistic sophistication implies that there exists only one plausible prior; finally, “plausible posteriors” can be derived via Bayesian updating. Several familiar decision models are consistent with the proposed axioms. JEL classification: D81 Running Title: PLAUSIBLE PRIORS

A Behavioral Characterization of Plausible Priors : Online Appendix
This Online Appendix contains (i) additional results and discussion related to the notion of plausible priors, and (ii) proofs that have been omitted from the main text in the interest of brevity. In particular, it presents two constructions that deliver a continuum of behaviorally equivalent representations for arbitrary MEU and Bewley preferences. ∗An earlier draft of this paper was circulate...

متن کاملA Behavioral Characterization of Common Priors
A state-contingent claim has positive expectation with respect to the common prior if and only if it can be decomposed into n agent-specific claims such that it is commonly known that each agent’s expectation of his claim is strictly positive.
متن کاملBayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models
Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...
متن کاملVariational Segmentation with Shape Priors
We discuss the design of shape priors for variational regionbased segmentation. By means of two different approaches, we elucidate the critical design issues involved: representation of shape, use of perceptually plausible dissimilarity measures, Euclidean embedding of shapes, learning of shape appearance from examples, combining shape priors and variational approaches to segmentation. The over...
